VFX101 Assessment #3

Well, we have the amazing task of creating a 1-3 minute animation. With no previous experience apart from a 10 SECOND walk cycle in flash. Its quite a large step, but im trying to calmly plan and create it rather than jump blindly into oblivion.
Andrew said to us that we'd have to do this first project independently so he can learn our weakness's and strengths. So i figured i'd try to focus on my strengths, so i thought i'd hand draw this one. (i dont have a good enough computer to do anything much at the moment anyway- so it worked out well.) i'm a crazy nutter for trees. I love trees, photographing them, drawing them etc. so i thought i would try to inco-operate a tree into my story somehow.
Weeks ago, when our walkcycles were still being completed, Matt Kiah and I sat on the couches in rivcoll- kiah slept :-P and matt and i drew stuff. And a creepy character, whome i later called "Frederick" arose from my brain that day. He was soo awesome, but he was far too detailed to animate. But, i had an idea which arose from him...
that idea was to have Frederick living alone in a dark house which was in a forest, he spent each day with a tree that grew next to his house, he watered it and cared for it. One day an evil spirit (not quite sure why) mean heartedly puts a curse upon the tree and the tree grows into Fredericks house, sadly to save his home Frederick has to destroy the one thing he loves - the tree. and he cuts it down as he weeps.
But how to conclude it?
Something was not sitting right with this idea, so i had a brainstorming session in my visual diary... and discovered many other ways to include a tree, and have the idea play with ur emotions a little more.

Above is the evolution of my character, George. Where my idea started with "Frederick" on the left and all the way to the right where "George" is.
I still have an animatic to get done... but im finding it extremely hard to attempt in flash, i think i will take advantage of the computer labs, and use Adobe Premier instead.

The Story
The story is of a man, mourning the loss of his wife.
He throws her ashes off the cliff near their house, and then goes home, where he stays for weeks/days? havnt quite decided a time frame yet. Anyway, one night as he is sitting drunkly at the table gazing at the empty chair opposite him, he hears his voice being called in the wind. So he goes outside to see whats going on. He goes down the cliff to the tree (her ashes landed in this tree) and sits on the swing thats hanging from the tree... and closes his eyes, pretending she is nearby. His wifes spirit then comes from the tree, grabs the soul from him and takes him inside the tree with her, they share a silent moment, a kiss and then she shoots upward, forming a star above the tree... He is shot back into his body, and is found gazing at this star. The next day he is all dressed up, cleanly shaven, clutching a bunch of flowers, he cheerfully(but not too cheerfully) takes these flowers down to the tree, sits them at the foot of the tree and sits on the swing, gazing again at the beautiful star.
The End.
